There are many educational opportunities available to Local 556 members that are provided through CUPE education programs. One of our executive’s goals in “building a strong local” is to develop and support members through successful modes and levels of education.

We encourage every member to learn more about the basics of what unions are, where we came from, what our achievements have been, rights, the grievance procedures and health and safety in the workplace. The Introduction to Stewarding, Labour History, or the Shop Steward Learning Series is great for this.

Other active members may want more, such as bargaining courses, Facing Management, Advanced Shop Stewarding, Note Taking, Parliamentary Procedures, Representing Members at Investigative/Disciplinary Meetings, etc. These are examples of such courses for the members holding positions such as Shop Stewards, Unit Vices, Grievance or Bargaining Committees.

CUPE education programs are offered year round in various locations. The local will reimburse wages and travel expenses (with union and employer approval) for CUPE education workshops.

If you see a workshop you would like to attend or have any questions, then please contact your shop steward, unit vice or our education coordinator.
